The belt itself is often not the problem. The timing belt tensioner bearing tends to wear out and freeze up, which then shreds the belt.
Generally, mileage wise, you'll see them go out on the 2.0t's, at much higher mileage. At the dealership, I would replace stretched timing chains almost always, out of warranty, well past 100,000 miles. The first 2.0t I did a chain on, had 187,000 miles which is like in the mid 200,000kms. The chain is much bigger issue on the 3.8, than the 2.0t.
