This lens has gotten a bad rap. I've just tested my old Nikkor 24-70 f:2.8 next to my new Nikkor 24-70 f:2.8 VR, and in controlled (but not scientific lab) conditions I'm finding the new lens superior on all fronts. Sharper across the entire picture area. I think there might be a little hysteria going on out there.

Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM – $2,198. Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM – $1,999. Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED – $1,697. Tokina AT-X 24-70mm f/2.8 Pro FX – $937. It’s less than half the cost of each of the three current models, and only a little over half the cost of the previous Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G. Of course, DXOMark scores don’t tell you
Of course, I do own a light DX setup like others have mentioned for when I get lazy. But no, by too heavy, there are no balance issues or anything. The 24-70mm f/2.8 VR is a great lens! When I had a D750, my 24-70mm remained fixed on it 95% of the time. 24-70mm is a excellent focal length for many functions. The Nikon Z 28-75mm f/2.8, which I’m reviewing today, is $1200. That’s literally half the price, and it begs an important question: why? Nikon Z 28-75mm f/2.8. The first clue is that the Nikon Z 28-75mm f/2.8 is not an S-line lens.

Canon (mk2) 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS (Approx. $2500) Nikon (mk1) 70-200mm f/2.8 VR (Approx. $1500, only available used now) Nikon (mk2) 70-200mm /f.28 VRII (Approx. $2400) These four lenses, I would wager, have probably earned professional photographers millions of dollars in profits over the past decade or so. Yes, you heard me right!

The 24-70 is 2.9x zoom ratio. The 14-24, only 1.7x. If you compare the Nikon to other lenses of the same focal length, you'll see it is much better than you give it credit for. semaphore's gear list: Nikon D850 Nikon AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED Nikon 85mm F1.8G Nikon 35mm F1.8G ED Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm F4G ED VR.
Nikon D750, 100% crop, 70 mm@f2.8, left Nikkor 24-70G, right Tamron 24-70 G2. G version of Nikon lens slightly outperforms new VR version in central sharpness (except of 24mm in this comparison). The difference is most pronounced at 70mm. Where VR version shines above all 20-70s is edge of frame.

Thom Hogan's 70-200 VR II review shows side-by-side image comparisons, and yesthe Nikkor 70-200 VR II loses a TON of effective focal length at minimum focusing distance at 200mm, where the VR II is actually134mm in measured, effective, real, actual focal length. The Nikon Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR is not a heavy-duty metal lens that you can drive your car over, nor is it meant to be. At 570 grams / 1.25 pounds, it’s barely heavier than the Nikon Z 24-70mm f/4 kit lens (which is 500 g / 1.10 lbs). Nikon went with an external plastic construction to save weight, except for a few important points like the Cropped from Nikon Z9, Z 24-200mm VR at 24mm wide-open at f/4 hand-held at 1 / 10 at Auto ISO 1,400 ( LV 3½), Perfectly Clear (two passes to lift the shadows). bigger or fit-to-screen. The 17-55mm f/2.8 weighs a ton and costs $1,500. I'd skip it. I suggest the 18-55 or 18-200 VR first depending on your budget. This 18-70 would be my third choice and dead last would be the heavy 17-55 2.8. My biggest beef with this 18-70 is the weird camming of the zoom.
Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S: Autofocus. The lens autofocuses in a spritely manner in good light and signs of it hunting for focus were only observed when it was used in an extremely dim indoor setting. Nikon Z5, Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S, 1/500sec at f/2.8, ISO 100. I assigned the L-Fn2 button to perform AF-ON for a majority of my testing

Below are our sharpness measurements at 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm. The next page of this review compares these numbers to the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 VR and 24-120mm f/4 F-mount lenses, but I’ll mention first that these are very impressive numbers, among the best we have seen so far on wide to normal range zoom lenses.
